Why Austria is changing
Take part in several energy communities
Use one metering point in up to five energy communities.
What changed
Multiple participation
Each energy community submits the agreed participation factor through the market process. The factors for one metering point may add up to no more than 100%.
Use prices that follow the electricity market
This requires a Smart Meter.
What changed
A right to dynamic pricing
Smart Meter customers have a statutory right to a contract whose price follows the spot market by the hour or quarter-hour. Suppliers with more than 25,000 metering points must offer one.
Use self-generated electricity across several sites
One customer can draw electricity from several of their own sites.
What is scheduled
Self-supply across sites
The law takes effect on 1 October 2026. The first market processes are scheduled for 5 October within one grid area; cross-grid support is planned for 5 April 2027.
Share renewable electricity with someone else
Sell or give self-generated renewable electricity to another participant.
What is scheduled
Peer-to-peer contracts
Peer-to-peer contracts do not require an energy-community legal entity. The first market processes are scheduled for 5 October 2026 within one grid area; cross-grid support is planned for 5 April 2027.
Give parts of one site different energy contracts
Have storage or generation billed separately on the same grid connection.
What is planned
Virtual metering
Calculated billing points divide one grid connection for billing purposes. The October 2027 roadmap target covers storage and hybrid plants on network levels 1–5. All billing points must initially belong to the same customer.
Adjust participation several times a day
Change during the day how much of one metering point goes to each sharing arrangement.

Adjustable participation factors
By 1 April 2028, the law requires assignments to several shared-energy arrangements, and the participation factor for each, to be adjustable several times per day.

Behind every energy choice are meter data, market rules and regulated processes. We want energiedaten.at to handle that machinery so energy service providers and software companies can make those choices available through their own services.

Determine which options the market rules allow for a site or metering point.

Compare the available options using measured consumption and generation.
Put decisions into effect
Carry out selected regulated changes after the customer has explicitly consented.
Our scope is energy data, decision support and regulated market processes. Energy management systems control devices, batteries and electrical loads.

Where we start today
Energy service providers and software companies can embed Austrian electricity and gas meter data in the services they already offer. energiedaten.at handles regulated access and delivers the values into their systems. This is the part we provide today.

Where it goes
Companies can compare and act on options across sites, contracts, energy communities and investments.
Households can receive clear choices through the energy service providers and software they already use.
Energy service providers and software companies can offer those choices without implementing every Austrian market process themselves.
Why I build this
I have built software for Austria's energy sector for over a decade. Long enough to see what is missing, and how the rules work in practice. I would like to see this change, so I am building the part I know how to build.
